This High School Team Celebrated Its Championship Too Early, Then Karma Came Calling

There may be no more painful way to lose a game than what Burrillville High School went through on Sunday. Burrillville hit what they thought was a game-winning jumper with just seconds to go in the State Championship game in Rhode Island. All they needed was one more stop, and they seemingly got that on the very next play. After a steal, a Burrillville player simply tossed the ball high in the air and the celebration was on.

But unbeknownst to Burrillville — which was too busy celebrating its State Championship — its opponent, Chariho, shrewdly caught the loose ball and called a quick timeout. After referees broke up the party, Chariho had one second left to try and win the game.

The Chariho head coach drew up a perfect lob play for his team that resulted in the game-winning basket. Now it was Chariho’s time to celebrate as Burrillville, having believed they won the State Championship just seconds before, sulked off of the court in disarray.

The rapid switch from the elation of winning to the misery of losing was reminiscent of the Cincinnati Bengals vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL Wild Card round earlier this year, but even faster and more devastating.
