Moviegoers really have no idea what they are in for when they check out “Zombieland” this weekend. No, the new action comedy isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it’s incredibly entertaining and has a massive left turn that no one will expect nor should anyone spoil. Speaking to stars Woody Harrelson and Jessie Eisenberg last week on a very hot Santa Monica, Calif. pier it was obvious their physical discomfort couldn’t withhold their enthusiasm over what could become a very big word of mouth hit. Just check out Harrelson’s smile. He was beaming all day.
As Columbus and Tallahassee, Eisenberg and Harrelson play two survivors in a world where the human race has been overtaken by a virus turning a majority of the population into zombies. Unlike “Dawn of the Dead” or “28 Days Later” this is played for almost entirely comic effect in a “it is what it is” tone. Making their way across the country they run into two gun-toting sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) who, to say the least, complicate their plans.
Eisenberg, who is so self-depricating he can make Michael Cera seem pompous, also reveals a funny anecdote that proves being a movie star doesn’t stop you from being made fun of from teenagers in the neighborhood.
