People Your Age Aren’t Having Nearly As Much Sex As You Imagine

Good news, everyone: Despite what the TV and Fifty Shades of Grey are telling you, people don’t have that much sex. And that’s not in regards to like super kinky sex or anything. It’s just sex. All those people who tell you that you need to do it five times a week or your love is dead? They’re wrong! Because a new study shows that most people aren’t spending their entire lives boning. And, even better news: As you get older, you get it on even less. Not a huge surprise? Well, then why be ashamed of all the sex you’re not having?

The study, conducted by the Kinsey Institute For Research in Sex, Reproduction and Gender found that while those who are younger (18-29) were having sex more frequently (twice as much!) than people in their 40s, that number isn’t as big as you think it might be. In fact, people falling into the 18-29 age range only endorsed having sex 112 times a year, meaning that they’re only doing it twice a week! And, if everything we know about sex surveys is true, then we have to assume that some people are probably inflating their numbers. That means that whatever amount of sex you’re having — if you’r comfortable with it — is enough and we can all stop comparing!

From Esquire:

The study showed a distinct and depressing decline in sexual activity as we age, with 30-39 year-olds getting hot and heavy 86 times per year, or 1.6 times per week.

The 40-49 year-old category dropped again to on average 69 times a year or 1.3 times a week, suggesting that as you get older either the quality of sex becomes more important than the quantity or that most couples by that point can’t stand to be so near to each other more than once every seven days, depending on your outlook.

Or there’s just a lot of really good TV on, okay? Either way: Good news, you’re doing fine!

Also: Guess we were wrong to worry about millennials because it turns out they’re having way more sex than previously thought! Good for them! (But you can always just watch TV, too.)
