It seems like Suicide Squad, a dark and gritty supervillain film packed with turn of the century nü metal hits isn’t for everyone. Reviews of the DC extended universe film were as bleak as the subject matter once the embargo lifted, and outside of Margot Robbie’s take on Harley Quinn, nearly everyone was laughing behind the back of the Joker and Will Smith. Some delighted in the movie’s shortcomings, in a so bad it’s good kind of way, while others remained frustrated that Suicide Squad, to them, was so bad it was bad.

Even Rotten Tomatoes is feeling the pressure, with fans wanting to shut down the review aggregator just for hosting Suicide Squad‘s bad reviews. Yes, comic fans everywhere are ignoring Jared Leto’s joker to channel Heath Ledger and ask, “why so serious?” It’s just a comic book movie, one that delights in its insanity, after all.

Count Kevin Smith, comic book geek, lover and writer as one of those fans who are all-in on David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. He wrote a lengthy Instagram post telling the director that he did DC Comics proud.

Here’s the full quote:

I look up to @suicidesquadmovie maker #DavidAyer. His #endofwatch, shot with a mixture of media including dashboard & body cams, was the work of a true filmmaker. And I don’t know how he got me to love a tank movie, but #fury is another amazing Ayer effort. When I heard he was shepherding a cinematic #suicidesquad, my already-high interests in a @dccomics movie shot over the top: what would a gritty guy like Dave do with the likes of #Deadshot & #HarleyQuinn? Well I think he made magic and did #dccomics proud.

The #Squad movie doesn’t look like any other comic book flick I’ve ever seen. The periodic use of both #Batman and the #joker as background characters instead of the usual leads was thrilling and felt like our first real glimpse at an interconnected #dceu. The cast is top notch but Harley, as expected, steals the show. The #jokerandharley beats are simply wonderful for a longtime fan to watch and make you immediately wanna see the all-Harley movie they already announced. Throwaway moments made me so happy (like Katana and her Soultaker sword) but this flick as a whole had me smiling the whole time. Thanks to her name, my kid @harleyquinnsmith_ was already on board for this movie – and she loved it (like LOVED it). I’ll be heading back to see it again tonight so expect a brand new #FatManOnBatman review soon. #KevinSmith

It’s clear that Suicide Squad, unlike Batman V Superman, will be one of those movies that will be argued over for years to come. Is it good? Is it bad? We’ll never truly be able to come to a consensus, but one thing is for damned sure — Jared Leto is edgy.
