Can You Name The Band That Released Four Number-One Albums In The Same Year?

By / 10.10.13

Sorry, Buckethead fans, but Splatters isn’t the number-one album in the country; no, according to Billboard, that high-selling honor goes to Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2, the less interesting of the two albums JT’s released this year. It sold 350,000 copies in the United States, dethroning Drake’s superior Nothing Was the Same after one week at the (starting at the?) top. Timberlake is now one of only 16 artists to release multiple albums that hit #1 in the same calender year, and the first since One Direction in 2012. (What? You expected F*cked Up?)

The other names: the Kingston Trio, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, DMX, Jay-Z, Garth Brooks, 2Pac, System of a Down, Eminem, the Glee cast (remember: more popular than the Beatles), and Susan Boyle, who all had either two or three. But can you guess the one band that, in 1969, not only had the top-selling album in the country from JANUARY TO JUNE, but also charted four separate albums in that 12-month span? HINT.

(The HINT was the ANSWER.) In 1969, the Monkees released The Monkees, More of the Monkees, Headquarters, and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd., all of which topped the Billboard Top 200, alongside Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Diana Ross and The Supremes Greatest Hits, and not much else. It’s a feat that’s unlikely to be matched, let alone topped, unless Justin Timberlake and the Glee dorks collaborate on separate albums for St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Kwanzaa. I wouldn’t put it past them.
