When I first heard an Alabama Shakes song a while back — having not seen them at the time — I assumed that the band’s lead singer was a dude with a really soulful and talented voice. But then I saw them in person a few weeks later and was blown away when Brittany Howard walked up to the mic and began channeling what sounded to me like the ghost of Janis Joplin. The sounds that were coming out of that woman’s mouth that night were shockingly mesmerizing.
So if you’ve never seen the Shakes before, prepare yourself to experience likewise. And be sure to catch them live when they come to a town near you. They’re a fabulous live band. You can stream their new album on NPR. Enjoy.
