“The American dream involved some pretty basic stuff, a good job where you felt some security, a good education. People felt if they worked hard they could get there. I don’t think people went around saying to themselves, ‘I need to have a 10,000-square-foot house’. I think there has also been a shift in culture. We weren’t exposed to the things we didn’t have in the same way that kids these days are.”

He continued: “There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Kids weren’t monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing or where Kanye West was going on vacation and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success.”

I don’t think Obama was taking a shot at Kanye West and Kim Kardashian but he shouldn’t have named them, he could have just said celebrities. Kanye West worked hard to reach his, “American Dream,” and can’t be faulted for the lifestyle he lives now. Can you really blame celebrities, isn’t it the media broadcasting these luxurious lifestyles? It is up to parents to teach their children what they should value in life.

Some people don’t focus on a owning a home, some want to travel the world. While some want the comfort of having a job, others want to own their own business. We must all create our own, “American Dream,” and work hard to obtain it. Obama’s dream was to become president, some would say that was more far fetched than owning a 10,000-square-foot house.

What is your, “American Dream”?
