Shaq Just Wants Boston To Love Him

By / 09.07.10

When Shaquille O’Neal signed with the Boston Celtics for a two-year contract to presumably close out his career, it marked the sixth team that he would play for in his illustrious career as one of the most dominant centers in the game. And seeing as he has a tendency to leave his previous fan bases less than thrilled with his words, the Big Thrower Under the Bus is trying his hardest to be a popular fella in Beantown. For the past few weeks he’s been popping up all over town, quick with a smile and glad to take pictures with everyone, which is what he did over the weekend when he crashed a couple’s wedding.

According to NESN.com, Shaq waltzed into the wedding of Kristen and Wes Schifone, who were of course thrilled to have the superstar interrupt. He took pictures with the wedding party and guests, and he even showed up the next morning for brunch, with a reporter from the Boston Globe. Later, he traveled to Aruba for their honeymoon with a photographer from Swank.

But is Shaq’s mouth still getting him bad press after the jump?

While hosting his charity golf tournament on Friday, Shaq told reporters that he was excited about finishing his career in Boston because he got to play with “unselfish” players, instead of the guys he played with in Cleveland, whom he said were always worried about who got to take the shots. Specifically, he called out Mo Williams for taking too many shots, as if the Big Bricklayer weren’t seeing enough action. And while 1) It’s just Mo Williams and B) It’s seriously just Mo Williams, NBA.com’s Steve Aschburner (Ed. – Tee hee!) just doesn’t like it:

O’Neal’s shot at Williams and the Cavs lacks class because it shrugs off the responsibility he bore — and seemed happy to shoulder at the start — for getting that “ring for the King.” About the only public admission that we’ve gotten from Shaq about the failure to produce was his response in an August New York Times interview to a question about Cleveland’s declining fortunes without James and him. “We would have liked to have given them a better ending,” O’Neal said.

Aschburner (Ed. – Tee hee!) also writes that this kind of behavior is unexpected of Shaq, who previously feuded with former teammates including Penny Hardaway, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and Steve Nash. He also possibly stole Nash’s idea for a reality TV show and turned it into Shaq Vs. So yeah, aside from this happening everywhere else, this is a complete shock.
