Boo LeBron, And Boo Him Mightily

By / 12.02.10

By now, you’ve probably heard that LeBron James and the Miami Heat are making their first trip to Ohio since LeBringingmytalentstoSouthBeach took off from his hometown in July. The Cleveland Cavaliers have played the victim card perfectly over the last five months, and that community’s big ball of resentment could reach critical mass when they “welcome” James’s new team tonight. There has been speculation of violence and choreographed heckling, which is wonderful, because these are the kinds of things that I need to show interest in an NBA game being played in December.

I don’t have a problem with anyone who spends a fair amount of time honing his craft, recognizing his own abilities and/or basking in the fact that he or she can do what only a handful of others on this planet could possibly achieve. In fact, I like that. I cherish that. That’s American to me. We’re not all equal, and we’d probably be a lot better off if we stopped pretending to be.

But I don’t need to be beaten over the head with it. Everything has already been said about The Decision and what a PR botch that was. Same for LeBron’s early retirement trip to Miami, pairing up with two other NBA stars, perhaps so that he could exert himself even less than he already was. And now he’s fighting Dwyane Wade to be The Man, and it’s a rivalry that will continue until they start playing NBA games with two balls at once.

LeBron will finally face his greatest critics tonight, and he should hear them.
