This Late Hit By Central Michigan Knocked Syracuse Quarterback Eric Dungey Out Of The Game

Unless you live in Upstate New York, you can be forgiven if didn’t pay too much attention to the Central Michigan vs. Syracuse early afternoon game on this Saturday, but there was at least one noteworthy play that came out of it.

The Orange led 10-3 when freshman quarterback Eric Dungey connected with Dontae Strickland to give Syracuse a two-touchdown lead.

However, on the very same play, Dungey was absolutely leveled by Central Michigan defensive lineman Mitch Stanitzek after he released the ball in a helmet-to-helmet hit that could certainly be perceived as dirty.  The officials felt that it was, and they ejected Stanitzek after the hit along with penalizing Central Michigan fifteen yards on the play.

Dungey walked off the field under his own power, but he was removed from the game and did not return.

Syracuse already lost its original starting quarterback, Terrel Hunt, for the season in the first game of the year against Rhode Island. Dungey, a true freshman, was the backup and his removal called for third-stringer Austin Wilson to enter the game for the Orange.

If Dungey has to be out for an extended period of time, especially as a result of a dirty hit, that would be pretty devastating for ‘Cuse. If he can’t play next week, Syracuse will have to start their third string quarterback in the Carrier Dome against LSU, so that could get real ugly, real fast.
