So How Much Better Were ‘True Detective’ Premiere Ratings Than Other Recent HBO Series Premieres?

We’re already in the tank for HBO’s True Detective and ready to discuss every Monday. If you guys play your cards right we might even start tossing out some theories. Cross those fingers. And it looks like we weren’t the only ones amped for the premiere. Per Deadline:

Before Girls at 10PM on Sunday there was the series premiere of True Detectives, with McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two Louisiana state police officers on the trail of a murderer. The new series pulled in 2.3 million viewers in it debut airing for the best HBO premiere since Boardwalk Empire launched in 2010 with 4.8 million viewers. True Detectives beat both the 2011 Game Of Thrones opener’s 2.2 million and the now-heading for its third and final season The Newsroom, which drew 2.1 million in its 2012 beginning.

Despite the fact that Deadline insists on going plural with the show name, I’m going to assume these numbers are correct, and in doing so try and imagine a world where people were essentially equally excited to watch Game of Thrones and The Newsroom. That aside aside, this is good news for all things True Detective. I see more “alright alright alright” award show acceptance speeches in our future.
