Is Daryl Dixon Gay? A Potential Game Changer For ‘The Walking Dead’ And For Television.

Over the course of The Walking Dead, Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon has evolved into the show’s most popular and most well-liked character. The last couple of seasons, however, there’s been a lot of speculation about whether he will hook up with Beth or with Carol, as both characters seem sweet on Daryl. But what if the reason he hasn’t begun a relationship with either one is because he’s not interested in them. Because he’s not interested in women at all.

Could Daryl Dixon be gay? It’s a possibility, according to the creator of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman.

There’s already been a brief lesbian relationship on The Walking Dead, but no major same-sex male couple. Could Daryl Dixon be the bad-ass gay character that television needs? Maybe, says Kirkman. From an interview with Comicbook.com:

When asked about the possibility that Daryl is gay Kirkman said, ‘All I can say is that it’s been discussed.’

‘We have very specific ideas about Daryl’s sexuality, or the seeming lack thereof, and if there’s ever a quiet period in the show where he’s not consistently distracted by crossbowing, we’ll tackle it in the show.’

When asked if that was something the show’s producers would allow, Kirkman replied, ‘For the record, they absolutely would.’

I don’t know if I would call that a game changer, exactly, but it would mean a major — and popular — gay character on the most watched show in all of television. And Daryl Dixon would be the least stereotypical gay man on television since Adam Pally’s character on Happy Endings.

That would be monumental.
