Though it seemed that any questions about Daryl Dixon‘s sexuality had been answered when Robert Kirkman poured cold water on the brushfire of speculation that he started, Conan O’Brien checked in with Norman Reedus on the question last night on Conan.

Reedus has spoken out about his willingness to play Daryl as a gay character before, revealing that series co-creator Frank Darabont had discussed the possibility with him early on, but Reedus’ enthusiasm — “If that’s the story they gave me, I would rock that story. I’m not afraid.” — is new.

Unfortunately, Reedus’ remarks won’t likely change Daryl’s path, even though television could always use more strong gay characters; specifically The Walking Dead, which up until about two weeks ago had been almost entirely devoid.

Kirkman made a decision to put the kibosh on the possibility that Daryl is gay, though, and that’s that unless he indicates that there is some wiggle room. But in that TV’s top unwashed sex symbol’s orientation continues to generate interest and conversation despite the denials, it almost seems certain that Daryl will never diverge from the asexual path that he’s been on in an effort to keep the peace and the buzz. Which means that his sexuality is more of a choose your own adventure thing for viewers, and that there is another thing he and Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory have in common.
