Nearly one year ago today, Tracy Morgan was involved in a car accident that severely injured him and killed one of his best friends, comedian James McNair. The 30 Rock star spoke about the crash on-camera for the first time since it happened earlier this morning on Today, pledging that while he’s not 100 percent yet, once “I’m there, you’ll know it, and I’ll make you laugh.”

It’s hard watching the interview, especially when McNair is brought up. That’s when Morgan, who’s usually such a source of delightfully weird energy, gets choked up and says that he watched footage of the crash every day after he came out of a coma. The case against Walmart is settled, Morgan said, but “the pain is always going to be there for [James McNair].”
