The last time Eddie Murphy stepped into Studio 8H as an SNL cast member was on February 25, 1984, when Edwin Newman hosted with Kool & the Gang as the musical guest. He was a sensation on the verge of superstardom, which he achieved with Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, and Eddie Murphy Raw. In the past, Murphy has said that he hasn’t returned to the stage that made him famous because he was pissed — “They said some sh*tty things. There was that David Spade sketch. I made a stink about it, it became part of the folklore. What really irritated me about it at the time was that it was a career shot.” — but that’s seemed to pass, because he’s been confirmed to attend SNL‘s 40th anniversary special, which airs February 15th.
Murphy revealed the news during a phone interview with News One when asked about why he’s never returned to the show since leaving in 1984: “It’s just timing. It just never worked out where the timing was right for me to do it…They’re actually having a 40th anniversary I think in two weeks. I’m going to that, and that’ll be the first time I’ve been back since I left.” (Via)
