Parker Posey As ‘Lost In Space’s’ Dr. Smith Is The Most Genius Casting, Netflix

I don’t usually have a strong stance one way or the other on remakes since they wind up being a mixed bag just like every other creative project. I may be against one that has a particularly nostalgic place in my heart but even then, I know it’s inevitable and I also know I don’t have to watch. When I heard Netflix was going to remake the 1960s sci-fi classic Lost in Space I was cautiously optimistic but not particularly excited. Today that’s been upgraded to hyped. Why? They’ve cast Parker Posey in the most amazing role. Never fear, Smith is here.

Yes, Deadline reports the role of Dr. Zachary Smith, originated by the incomparable Jonathan Harris (and Gary Oldman in the 1998 film), will be played by a woman this time around. I had no idea I wanted it but now I can’t think of anyone more perfect for that role. Posey has had a great career since debuting in Dazed and Confused, going on to star in Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries like Best in Show as well as Superman Returns and tons of indie films.

Here’s the synopsis of the Netflix update:

Taking its cues from the original series, the show centers around the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons. Equal parts family drama and sci-fi adventure, it is a survival story for the ages.

This reboot, remake, whatever you want to call it, has been in the works from Legendary (who just nabbed the rights to Dune) for a few years now. Last year we found out it would probably find a home at Netflix which was subsequently confirmed this year. Writers/executive producers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will be giving us 10 episodes to air in 2018. So far the cast includes Toby Stephens as John Robinson, Molly Parker as Maureen Robinson (mom and dad), Taylor Russell as Judy, and Maxwell Jenkins as Will. They’ve yet to cast middle child Penny, Major Don West, or the voice of The Robot.

I watched the show in repeats growing up and had an affinity for it, having already been a big sci-fi nerd (also, I adored their matching space outfits) and with the addition of Posey I’m definitely giving this one a shot once it’s ready. What about you?
