Seth MacFarlane Will Host The Oscars, Do Voices

Wanna read a strange sentence? The elephant went to the beach and played the kazoo. Wanna read another strange sentence? Seth MacFarlane will be hosting the 2013 Oscars.

It’s a bold and unexpected move, especially since he has never hosted another awards show, although MacFarlane proved himself more than capable on live TV with a recent Saturday Night Live hosting gig, which in retrospect would seem to be a major part of this Academy Awards audition.

He’s also been Master of Ceremonies at one other slightly less prestigious event …

“It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars,” MacFarlane said in a statement. “My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.” [EW]

Actually, all (or most) kidding aside, this kinda makes sense. The Oscar people really like hosts who can sing and do voices and what not (Billy Crystal, Hugh Jackman, Billy Crystal, Billy Crystal), and that sort of stuff is right up MacFarlane’s alley. I’m not the biggest Family Guy fan in the world, but he did a decent job hosting Saturday Night Live, and he’s certainly capable of zinging some stuffed shirts in the front row for a few minutes, so who knows? One thing I do know, however, is that all the people worried about whether he’ll be ***CONTROVERSIAL*** should probably hop in the old wayback machine and remember that last year’s ceremony featured the host appearing in blackface in the opening montage. Yeah.

Anyway, between this, hosting SNL, and maybeprobably dating Emilia Clarke, Seth MacFarlane is having an A-OK last couple weeks.
