A Politician Learned The Hard Way Why You Should Never Mess With ‘Simpsons’ Fans

It’s clear Andrew Laming hasn’t seen “Bart vs Australia.” Otherwise, the politician would know better than to mess with The Simpsons.

Last week, Laming, a member of Australia’s conservative-leaning Liberal National Party, demanded on Facebook that the country have “more Math Science and no more PE teachers. We need no more Primary school teachers without specialties. We need no more Math taught by non-Math teachers. We need financial rewards for teachers with outstanding results and suspension/re-training for those that fail their kids.” He continued, “No more non-teachers added to State bureaucracies. Unions out of schools unless there is a safety issue.” Laming’s message eventually made its way to The Simpsons Against the Liberals Facebook page, which mocked Laming’s note with an image of Grampa Simpson pleading he’s not a crackpot.

The lambasting could have ended there, but Laming — who once wrote a guide about interacting with voters on social media — began responding to comments. “This is so boring the way you get excited about a real MP finally taking you seriously,” he wrote, and “i love watching you guys get irritated.” There are dozens of replies, but the meme-makers quickly fired back, too.

When someone asked Laming — who some in the group believe has ulterior motives — why he was “posting this stuff seriously,” he responded, “Because for many, this is the first time they ever engage directly with a pollie. Sure its inane, but there are also around a dozen serious questions in my inbox, and a raft of likes.” No publicity is bad publicity, and no boot is too big.
