Stephen King’s ‘The Mist’ Is Officially A Series, And From An Unlikely Network

The Mist is arguably one of Stephen King’s most enduring stories. It’s had a feature film adaptation, a radio play, and it was even ripped off for an episode of Ultraman. And now it’s coming back as a TV series, and in an unlikely place.

Spike TV, of all networks, has ordered a series. The Mist, as you might have gathered, is about a mist that floods a small New England town, but instead of just causing a few tourists from the Mid-Atlantic to slam into a tree, it brings insectoid monsters and other creepy-crawlies the local townspeople have to keep out of their homes and supermarkets. The series will be about how they survive, and whether they can cut the mist off at its source. Interestingly, the showrunner behind this hails from overseas and is best known for Rita, a comedy/drama about a teacher in Denmark.

Of course, first it has to get to air. Spike TV hasn’t had a scripted series in more than a decade, and it’s had a little trouble finding a series it wants to run. Red Mars seems unlikely to happen due to behind-the-scenes problems, and Harvest was scrapped in pre-production. But Stephen King has a way of getting to the screen, so we’ll be curious to see how The Mist fares as a long-running adaptation.
