The ‘Veep’ Season 5 Teaser Sarcastically Stands In Awe Of Our Democratic System

Speaking of acclaimed HBO shows with new seasons on the horizon, the first teaser for Veep‘s hotly anticipated fifth season just dropped. And by “dropped,” I mean it hit the ground with the force of an aged rock star’s dangling… jewelry. Yes, that’s right. “Jewelry.”

Armando Iannucci’s brilliant political satire — now in the hands of his successor, David Mandel — picks up where the previous season left off. The election is over and all the electoral votes are accounted for in what amounts to an exact tie, yet Madam President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) will retain her title for another four years. If, that is, nothing hilariously terrible blows up in her and her administration’s face anytime soon. A face that, as Meyer admits, is rife with signs of the massive amounts of stress her job exudes on her.

“My eyelids are starting to look like Keith Richards’ ball sack,” she exclaims. Always ready to counter her negativity, Gary Walsh (Tony Hale) responds accordingly: “Oh please, he wishes!”

Of course, fans of the series are already accustomed to its rhythms (and insults, no less), so it’s probably safe to say that something big is coming to disrupt Meyer’s hopes for a spa day.

The fifth season of Veep premieres Sunday, April 24 on HBO.
