Last night 60 Minutes aired a segment on the Foo Fighters — a segment hosted by Andersoon Cooper — so of course we’re going to post it here today, as it’s a must-watch for all fans of the band. Most of the interviews with Dave Grohl and the rest of the band took place in New Orleans back in May when they were in the city shooting part of their HBO show, Sonic Highways (which is quite good, btw) and performing secret shows at tiny, legendary jazz venues. In the piece, Grohl talked extensively about his fascination/obsession with the roots of American music.
“When I interview (musicians from various cities) I get them to explain not only the history of the city but the influence that that has on the music that comes from here. There’s a reason why Chicago blues sounds like Chicago blues. And there’s a reason why jazz music is here, in New Orleans,” Grohl told Cooper. “It could be anything. In Seattle, it rains all the time, so people stay in their basements and write songs…everybody knows Nashville as the country music capital of the world. But then I start to realize, wait a minute, all of the foundation of a lot of these musicians is in the church. Whether it’s Dolly Parton or Carrie Underwood, like they started in the church. I never knew that.”
Grohl also talked about the early days of his career, landing a gig as the drummer for Nirvana, and launching the Foo Fighters after the death of Kurt Cobain. Finally, the 60 Minutes segment on the band closed with this…
(Anderson Cooper narrating): Foo Fighters will be returning to each of the eight cities where they recorded “Sonic Highways,” but Grohl is looking forward to one city in particular.
Dave Grohl: That week we had in New Orleans totally changed my life.
Anderson Cooper: How so?
Dave Grohl: It made me fall head over heels in love with music all over again.
Dave Grohl’s love and appreciation for New Orleans only makes me love and appreciate him even more.
