Think back. Think way way back. Do you remember a gentleman named Bernie Sanders? Sorta popular guy, ran for president, Larry David did an impeccable impression of him, etc. Well, he just snapped up some new property in North Hero, Vt.

The Vermont alt-weekly Seven Days reports that Bernie Sanders and his wife Jane have shelled out nearly $600,000 for a summer home in the tiny town, which marks the third home owned by the Sanders, who also have places in Washington D.C. and Burlington, Vt. (This does not include the home inside Susan Sarandon’s heart.) The new digs include four bedrooms and 500 feet of Lake Champlain beachfront which doesn’t sound too shabby.

Considering the senator’s emphasis on pushing back against the 1 percent and running a campaign touting its lack of big money funding, it is a bit strange to hear about a swanky sounding real estate purchase from Sanders. Naturally, there’s been some grumbling about the purchase in relation to the Sanders mystique, but Jane O’Meara Sanders explained to Seven Days that the funding for the purchase came from the sale of another property they had in their possession.

“My family had a lake home in Maine since 1900, but we hadn’t had the time to go there in recent years — especially since my parents passed away,” she said. “We finally let go of it and that enabled us to buy a place in the islands — something I’ve always hoped for. ”

The couple had been frequent visitors to the Champlain Islands and the community of North Hero appears to have welcomed their new high-profile residents with open arms. Local shop Hero’s Welcome General Store has begun selling a sandwich in honor of Bernie Sanders named (what else?) Feel The Bun. Served on a “HUGE” homemade roll, the $6.99 offering includes sliced turkey, fresh apple chutney, hot pepper relish, lettuce, tomato and provolone cheese.

“It’s not fair that the Billionaire Class controls 99 percent of the bread,” declares the Feel The Burn menu description. “Here’s a sandwich for the rest of us … to keep us nourished until everything cool is free!”

It’s not quite the Democratic nomination, but you could do worse for a nom-nom-nomination.
