Stephen, meet Stephen (who is actually named Wardell). Monday night, as the Golden State Warriors lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 112-97, in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on ABC, Stephen Curry took another loss while Stephen Colbert ripped the MVP’s new Under Armour shoes on CBS.
Just some of the choice phrases used to mock these shoes — which have been quite the punching bag since launching last week — included “Air Josh Grobans,” “like a golf cart had sex with a jar of mayonnaise,” and “look like they’re putting themselves through nursing school.” Colbert also wondered if Curry meant to play for Golden State or for the Golden Girls.
It’s been a bit surreal to see the best player in the game this widely lambasted for something so universally agreed-upon as uncool. It is possible, of course, that Curry’s shoes are in fact much more suave and stylish and urbane than any of us can recognize, and that his new footwear is in fact as ahead of the curve as his league-changing style on the court.
But, you know, probably not.
These Suburban Dads Matter Too lows will likely continue to be one of the things that fans perplexed by Curry’s perfectness can enjoy some schadenfreude about. Get it while it’s hot.
