It seems like there’s not a week that goes by without news that some studio has ponied up serious cash to own the movie rights to some ridiculous property. It’s never something cool or clever or smart … it’s stuff like board games and emojis. When compared to those, an adaptation of the hit mobile game Angry Birds almost seems sane. People have already shown they’ll buy anything with Angry Bird branding, so it’s kinda surprising it took this long for a movie to come out.
Now we have a trailer and a release date – May 12, 2016. And from that trailer we have a plot: Red Bird is angry, so angry that he gets sent to an anger management retreat! But when pigs show up on the island, the only ones who can save birds from enslavement are Red and his fellow Angry Birds™. I don’t know whether to be horrified or impressed that they managed to stick to the plot of a game with no real plot.
They’ve also stacked the animated film with a ton of intriguing celebrity names, a key strategy to convince parents that an Angry Birds movie will be a relatively painless 90 minute respite from the endless hell of child rearing. Jason Sudeikis, Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage, Bill Hader, Josh Gad, Hannibal Buress, and Maya Rudolph all lend their voices to the movie.
So what do you think? Does this preview and the names behind the movie make you somewhat excited for Angry Birds? Could it be the Lego Movie of 2016? Or would you rather catapult yourself headfirst into a hard surface than see this in theaters?
