The First ‘Power Rangers’ Teaser Is Here And It’s Like A Gritty ‘Breakfast Club’

The first teaser trailer for Power Rangers is here, showing us our new Rangers hanging out as a ragtag version of The Breakfast Club that end up getting magic powers to battle the evil Rita Repulsa, played by Elizabeth Banks with a sinister flair that’s much different than the classic show.

We don’t get to see any of the Rangers in their costumes, but it would seem that there’s a definite update from the fabric looking getups they used to wear in the original show. There’s no look at Bryan Cranston as Zordon either, but Banks as Rita looks devilish, discussing how she’s killed Rangers in the past and leaving the annoying, goofy character she was in the show behind.

For me, I’m not sure how it works as a reboot judging from the look within this trailer. It seems to be following the basic teen format that we’ve seen with Divergent and The Hunger Games. They could’ve at least worked to keep it distinguished from those films and focus on the things that already set the show apart from those things. Instead, it seems like we’re getting another dark dramatic thing that will make a ton of money with new audiences.
