Tom Gabel, the lead singer of well-known Florida punk band Against Me!, has revealed to Rolling Stone that she is transgender, becoming one of the first “rock stars” to make such a proclamation, and will soon change her name to Laura Jane Grace. The group’s song “Transgender Dysphoria Blues” suddenly makes a lot more sense.
The announcement, part of a larger story that hits newsstands this Friday, says:
Gabel, who has dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years, will soon begin the process of transition, by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.
Gabel will eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace, and will remain married to her wife Heather. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” says Gabel. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.” (Via)
Good for Gabel to have the balls (you know what I mean) to come out on her own terms, and here’s hoping that Against Me!’s next tour, which begins later this month with the Cult, is free of incident from mouth-breathing protesters. (Banner via)
