Everybody got a good laugh on Tuesday when Donald Trump decided to throw his hat in the ring for the Republican nomination for President. However, when Trump took the stage to Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” Young was not laughing, as Mother Jones reports.
Young’s manager Elliot Roberts issued a brief statement to Mother Jones, which read:
Donald Trump’s use of “Rockin’ in the Free World” was not authorized. Mr. Young is a longtime supporter of Bernie Sanders.
Neither of these statements is surprising. Young is one of the most politically vocal musicians out there, and his values and opinions could not be further from Trump’s. This is not the first time a politician has used a song, only to be met with disapproval from the artist. Yet, it keeps happening. It’s almost like politicians are out of touch or something.
Young also has a new album coming out called The Monsanto Years which is a concept album taking on the Monsanto company. You know, the kind of thing that Trump is really into.
Update: Trump has decided to not use Neil Young’s work anymore. Campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told Rolling Stone:
“We won’t be using it again. There are plenty of other songs to choose from, despite the fact that Mr. Trump is a big fan and likes Neil very much. We will respect his wish and not use it because it’s the right thing to do.”
