Following in the footsteps of modern divas Adele, Madonna and Beyonce, Sam Smith is the latest artist to sing the James Bond theme song. The “Not the Only One” crooner revealed the big news via his Instagram on Tuesday, after initially claiming fellow Brit singer Ellie Goulding had it in the bag in July.
Titled “Writings on the Wall,” Spectre‘s theme was written by Smith and his “Stay with Me” co-writer Jimmy Napes. The singer expressed his excitement with being part of Bond’s “iconic British legacy.” From the caption on Instagram:
This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.
Speaking to BBC Radio 2, the male Adele claimed he recorded the song in January and that it only took him 20 minutes to write.
Just last week, Smith told BBC Radio 2’s Jo Whiley he was “definitely not” working on the project.
But, revealing his involvement on Tuesday, he told Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw: “I’m so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been a top secret mission of my own.”
He said he recorded the track in January.“I got called into the office with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes and they gave me the script, I read the script… they said ‘have a go at the song’.
“It’s the quickest I’ve ever written a song – it took 20 minutes… and they loved it!”
“I love the song so much,” he added..
You can pre-order “Writings on the Wall” now or wait until it’s released September 25, ahead of Spectre‘s November 6 U.S. release date.
