These days, the major currency of late night television programming is to create bits than can, in the parlance of our times, “go viral” on the internet. Because, you know, the kids today and their computers and their Snapchats and so on make it so that getting people to watch a clip a bunch on YouTube, or what have you, is the only way to really make an impact.
Recently, one of the most popular videos to come out of a late night show was queen of the world Adele’s appearance on The Late, Late Show with James Corden, wherein she partook in the segment known as “Carpool Karaoke.” You probably saw people, including Nicki Minaj, talking about it online, and now the numbers have arrived to help quantify just how successful it was.
The video notched more than 42 million views in its first five days on YouTube. This makes it the “most viral” video from a late night show to hit the internet since 2013.
Granted, three years isn’t that long ago, but, given how many thousands of clips that end up online from these shows every year, and how fast things on the internet are disposed, that’s incredibly impressive. It’s not the most popular Carpool Karaoke video of all-time just yet, Justin Bieber’s appearance has 52 million views, but, given the popularity of Adele, and how quickly it reached this level, Adele should overcome the Biebs soon.
In the end, anything that could convince Corden to spend more time on stuff like Carpool Karaoke, and less time on stuff like crime against humanity “Nuzzle Waaa?” is a positive for this world of ours.
