Even with reviews for Fox’s Rocky Horror Picture Show being somewhat mixed, there’s still a bit of pressure on NBC’s upcoming Hairspray Live! musical hootenanny. After all, 2015’s The Wiz set the bar for these sorts of events to something beyond camp distraction, so whaddya got, NBC?
The Peacock Network has lined up December 7 for their TV adaptation of the film-turned-musical-turned-film and today a fuss is being made about the confirmation that Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson (or JHUD, if you’re in a rush) will duet “Come So Far (Got So Far to Go)” to close the show. People reports that the song, which was an add-on to the 2007 motion picture update.
For those unfamiliar with the John Waters original or its various incarnations, Hairspray focuses on a plucky Baltimore teenager and her love of dancing in the setting of a racially divided city in 1962. Ariana Grande has been tapped to play that teenager’s best friend in the broadcast production and Jennifer Hudson takes on the role of DJ and local institution Motormouth Maybelle. To answer your other pressing question, hairspray is used in the both the musical and motion pictures.
Hairspray Live! is currently gearing up for their upcoming performance, but the cast and crew managed to find time to weasel in their entry into the Mannequin Challenge. Can you blame them?
