Bernie Sanders might not be getting the votes of his immediate peer group, but he’s steadily winning the hearts and minds of young people, particularly those who care a little bit too much about music. The Democratic presidential candidate celebrated his near tie in the Iowa caucus with projected frontrunner Hillary Clinton by giving an impassioned speech and then walking off to the sounds of David Bowie’s “Starman.”
While Bernie’s grip on Millennial voters has a lot more to do with policy than pop music, there’s no doubting that he scored cool points in the lead up to the Iowa caucus via a series of musical endorsements. Killer Mike of Run The Jewels has been a very vocal proponent of Sanders, even serving a spokesperson for the senator at several events. The rapper will join the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco for a “Feel The Bern” benefit concert in Los Angeles on February 5.
And, of course, there’s the candidates own musical past. He famously made a folk album in the ’80s and recently sang “This Land Is Your Land” with Vampire Weekend.
With so much of the music world surrounding him, it’s no wonder his song choices have turned toward David Bowie in recent weeks (given the outpouring of love that the late singer received following his death). Check out Sanders’ whole speech up top and listen for “Starman” at around the 16:40 mark.
