Pumpkin smasher Billy Corgan hates “feckless idiots,” Anderson Cooper, and you, probably. The list goes on and on, so let’s go on and on: He also despises SXSW “poseurs,” Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love (for a spell, at least), and the Smashing Pumpkins’ legacy.
On the flip side, here’s the complete list of things Billy Corgan loves… wrestling, cats, and Radiohead, who he called “the last band that really did anything new with the guitar.”
In an interview with EW, Corgan asked, “What is modern music?” before answering it himself:
If you look at most alternative rock music in 2015, it hasn’t really evolved for 20 years. We get our asses kicked by EDM or some of these artists that are more keyboard and drum machine and reverb. They’re engaging in new technology. Guitar isn’t new technology; there are only so many ways you can warp it around. Radiohead was probably the last band that really did anything new with the guitar.
Corgan says that once he started to “make peace and committed to playing guitars,” he realized “all the time I spent trying to reinvent the wheel was a waste of time,” which might explain why the Pumpkins’ most recent album, Monuments to an Elegy, received kind reviews. If Corgan wants to reinvent alt-rock, he should take a page from Run the Jewels’ book, and re-record Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness with his beloved cats. The world would smile politely in enjoyment.
