Last night, late night host Conan O’Brien took a break from telling jokes to pay a passionate tribute to one of his childhood heroes, Scotty Moore.
The profoundly influential Moore served as the lead guitarist for Elvis Presley and passed away earlier this week at age 84 in his home in Nashville. In the clip above, O’Brien admits that as a teenager growing up in Boston, he became a “fanatic” for early Elvis and the rockabilly genre (Elvis served as an inspiration for O’Brien’s signature pompadour and sideburns). In a rare moment of complete sincerity, Conan praised Moore for making his “dream come true” in 1998 when the legendary axe man sat in with the band on Late Night With Conan O’Brien.
O’Brien also posted a photograph of the two of them standing side-by-side on Twitter with the caption, “Scotty Moore changed the world with 6 strings that cost less than $1. He combined true genius with real humility.”

Moore, a native of Gadsen, Tennessee, had been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame and the Musicians Hall of Fame. He backed Elvis Presley starting in 1954 until the late ’60s, and even served as Presley’s personal manager in the early days of their careers. He remained in the music industry long after they parted ways.
