This week in album releases features a number of unsung heroes finally getting their due. DeJ Loaf is finally getting an official release out after a year of great rhyming, and Prince Royce is making a big push with his first English-language album after years of Spanish-language dominance. There’s also great new stuff from Ducktails, Jill Scott, Mas Ysa, Trae tha Truth and so many more. Here are the albums you need to hear this week.
DeJ Loaf – #AndSeeThatsTheThing EP
Detroit rhymer DeJ Loaf has had a steady strangle on the rap game for nearly a year now, but only now comes her first official release. While the heat of “Try Me,” “Me, U, and Hennessy,” and “We Be on It” has been on her mixtapes, new tracks like “Back Up” featuring Big Sean and “Hey There” with Future make her #AndSeeThatsTheThing EP worth the cost of admission. Besides, with all the fire that DeJ has been bringing on her free tapes, she’s long overdue for a payday.
Ducktails – St. Catherine
While Matt Mondanile initially started Ducktails as a side project for the breezy indie rockers in Real Estate, the band has now released more albums than his original group. St. Catherine, their fifth effort, continues to distinguish itself from the dream pop that Real Estate makes for something a little more psychy. We’ve already had previews of this shift like on “Headbanging in the Mirror” and “Surreal Exposure,” but St. Catherine as a whole isn’t afraid to get a little more wavy than we’re used to. That’s definitely not a bad thing.
Prince Royce – Double Vision
Prince Royce may be the biggest name in the United States that most of you have never even heard of. The Latin Pop star has sold hundreds of thousands of records and has nearly a billion YouTube views… with a “B.” Despite all the success he’s had so far, he’s now embarking on his biggest quest with his first primarily English-language album, Double Vision. A good way to start is his collab with Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull “Back It Up” and “Stuck on a Feeling” featuring Snoop Dogg. Both tracks have been racing up the charts, a good sign that Prince Royce will soon be a household name in both Spanish and English-speaking homes.
