Father John Misty didn’t come away from the Grammys with the award for Best Alternative Music Album; Pure Comedy was nominated but lost to The National’s Sleep Well Beast. He didn’t leave empty-handed, however, since Pure Comedy did tie with Magín Díaz’s El Orisha De La Rose to win Best Recording Package.
Father John Misty went the Drake route and didn’t show up to the ceremony this year, but at his concert in Sydney, Australia last night, he layered his signature sarcasm on thick and belatedly accepted his award. Doing his best impression of an overwhelmed award recipient, he had words about society, the shape of our planet, and superficiality:
“I don’t have a whole lot of time, but I just want to say f-ck society. I want to say that this government is a criminal organization. Uh, FlatEarth.com. When I was growing up, everyone told me — whether it was mom, dad, the church, school teachers, whoever — everybody was always saying it’s what on the inside that matters, and I think this is really evidence of the fact that it’s what outside that matters.”
