Any performance from Future at any awards show is going to be weird, because Future feels like a man out of time. It feels odd to attach our greatest living Purple One to any specific year, he just is. Even his marketing strategy reflects this, with singles like “Wicked” pouring forth months after their release (and with other projects dropped in the interim). Until recently, the VMAs have reflected this. In spite of his world-dominating run of mixtapes and albums over the last few years, Future has never been given a chance to perform at the annual awards show. Still, MTV couldn’t ignore Future Hendrix forever, so he took to the 2016 MTV VMAs stage to perform “F*ck Up Some Commas.”
As if to confirm the fact that he exists outside of understanding of time, Future performed a song that was only released last year, but an eternity ago in Pluto Standard Time. No one’s ever upset to hear “F*ck Up Some Commas”, it goes as hard now as it did a year ago, but there have been three whole projects released since he gave up the strip-club version of a locker room chant. Check it out up top.
