Fifteen years ago Monday, the world (that didn’t grow up watching The Mickey Mouse Clubs) was introduced to Britney Spears in the “…Baby One More Time” music video, and it was all worth it for this. I’m ashamed to admit this, but I remember where I was when I first saw the video, a.k.a. I was a 11-year-old boy at the time. That’s the power Britney had over pop culture (and pre-teens) in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and although I’ve long since deleted “Lucky” from my running playlist on my portable CD player, Brit’s still one of the biggest names in pop.
To unintentionally celebrate 15 years in The Biz, The Brit released her latest music video yesterday. It’s called “Work Bitch.” Sharks are involved. So are whips. It’s very confusing and a major transformation from when she was a 17-year-old impatiently tapping her pencil until it was time to dance in her school’s highway, as one does.
Now let’s follow her music video evolution, from 1998 to 2013, if only to remember how amazing “Toxic” is.
Britney didn’t hit her stride until the Smurfs one.
