We’ve been over this time and time again. The people who think that rock and roll is dead aren’t paying attention. But given that this sort of argument only grows with a certain sort of closed-mindedness, getting through to the stubborn coroners calling guitar music’s time of death can seem like an insurmountable task. Luckily, there’s Great Grandpa, a Seattle act so indebted to the sound’s of rock’s last great boom that even the most pessimistic rock fan will be forced to do a double take.
Take, for example, their new track “Teen Challenge.” The track from the group’s debut album Plastic Cough could easily slot into a compilation of lesser-known acts who rode major-label signing spree that made well-financed cult legends out of plenty of their fellow Cascadians. After a woozy guitar intro that’s sure to make Meat Puppets fans perk up, vocalist Alex Menne wails over the crunch and stop of her band, throwing out clipped-wing imagery that calls to mind their city’s most famous non-drinkable export.
Plastic Cough is out on July 7 via Double Double Whammy. Take a look at the tracklist below and pre-order it here.
