The Indie-Heavy Soundtrack To Jill Soloway’s ‘I Love Dick’ Features Ratatat, Iron & Wine, And Others

Today marks the premiere of I Love Dick, a new Amazon Video show from Transparent creator Jill Soloway, and to mark the occasion, music supervisor Bruce Gilbert has compiled a 17-track playlist of songs featured in the series’ first season. The mix has a ton of indie cred thanks to songs from Ratatat, Iron & Wine, Roberta Flack, Arthur Russell, Laura Mvula, and others, which led Soloway to say she’s “so crazy about this soundtrack”:

“I’m so crazy about this soundtrack for I Love Dick. The music is an homage to yearning, to art and to the west and the south and the southwest, to South America and to longing, with a thrumming heart that awakens everyone who hears it. Bruce Gilbert’s curation connects to the soul of this show and the wild desire at the center of this series.”

The show is based on the Chris Kraus novel of the same name that follows Chris and Sylvere, a couple in a rough patch with a growing fascination over an acquaintance named Dick, played in the show by Kevin Bacon in his return to TV. Gilbert credits the unconventional nature of the program with giving him a lot of creative freedom with the soundtrack:

“The groundbreaking nature of I Love Dick allowed me to tune into the undeniable… that there is a spirit of joy and love and longing in this show, a story at once holy and silly, that required just the right soundtrack. Contributions by Meshell Ndegeocello, Roberta Flack, Mirah, and most notably the late Lhasa de Sela whose songs play throughout the season, help tell this wildly original tale. It’s a music supervisor’s dream job.”
