More than 20 years after Three 6 Mafia’s proper debut Mystic Stylez, former member Juicy J remains proof of the group’s lasting endurance.
New mixtape SHUTDAFUKUP features the Southern hip-hop veteran alongside a new generation of artists who have clearly internalized the sound he helped popularize. The previously released “Kama Sutra” is produced by Mike WiLL Made It and features Cardi B. “Got Em Like” has guest verses by the late Lil Peep and Wiz Khalifa.
Despite how the guest list skews younger, Juicy J thinks of SHUTDAFUKUP as a throwback of sorts. Thank $uicideBoy$ the rising New Orleans rap duo produced the majority of the project, after they first linked up with Juice for his 2017 mixtape Highly Intoxicated.
“To me, [$uicideBoy$] made that old Three 6 Mafia, they made it relevant as of today and by me jumping on those songs,” Juicy J said to Billboard. “I guess people, they wanted to hear some of that old school Juicy J back in the early 1990s and when I did that, it was just classic.”
While SHUTDAFUKUP is Juicy J’s first new music of 2018, the Datpiff exclusive continues a productive streak that he had throughout last year, with Highly Intoxicated, Gas Face and Rubba Band Business. Listen below.
