The much sought after “millennial vote” in the 2016 Presidential election is something that has been framed as illustrious as a magical button that could thrust either candidate immediately into the Oval Office. Both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have made deliberate and profuse moves to appeal to the digital generation. Each has appeared on the many sets of late night talks shows and have tried to rally as much star power as they can garner, yet it would appear on this front that it’s Hillary Rodham Clinton who has taken a clear lead. The list of mainstream A-listers who’ve appeared at the DNC this week in Philadelphia rivals that of a bona fide award show. Adding yet another hand in support to the already comprehensive list is pop superstar, Katy Perry.
Stepping onto the stage of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, the 31-year-old vocalist urged the crowd “to have an open mind and use your voice.” However, clearly in expressing this sentiment she had but one candidate in mind as the powerhouse asserted, “So here’s how I’m going to use my voice. I’m going to vote for Hillary Clinton.” This official endorsement of the Democratic nominee came in the middle of a brief standup routine, a plug for hillaryclinton.com and even a mini concert. Perry cheekily emphasizes the importance of voting by stating, “you’ll be just as powerful as any NRA lobbyist. You’ll have as much say as any billionaire, or you can just cancel out your weird cousin’s vote if you like.” She went on to boast her Clinton fan girl status by revealing she has a couple of “saved messaged on [her] phone from HRC” as well as “a closet full of Hillary themed dresses”.
Perry concludes her DNC endorsement by way of performing two of her hits. Belting out her Olympic anthem “Rise” followed by her song that seemed ready made for this event in “Roar,” Perry officially joined the ranks of other stars who are #WithHer.
