In rather, uh unexpected collaboration, Maroon 5 dropped “Don’t Wanna Know,” today, with a guest verse from none other than Kendrick Lamar. The gist is that well, after a breakup you don’t want to know who your ex might be hooking up with. But considering that sentiment lasts the length of a whole song, it seems pretty clear that Adam Levine isn’t over it. The track, which was produced by Benny Blanco, is definitely pop, but falls into the ultra trendy tropical vibe with a bouncing vocal loop, handclaps and catchy synth.
As unlikely as it might be to hear Levine’s croons replaced by a K.Dot, technically they worked together before in 2013, when both Lamar and Levine appeared on The Lonely Island‘s “Yolo.”
According to an accompanying press release, the video for the song will be unveiled on NBC’s Today this Friday. The clip was directed by David Dobkin, who is known for directing kooky films Wedding Crashers and Shanghai Knights among others, and is also responsible for Maroon 5’s “Sugar” video which has over 1.4 billion views on YouTube and is easily the group’s most-viewed video.
The band is currently in the midst of its North American tour, but they will be performing “Don’t Wanna Know” live on Ellen on November 3. For now, you can check out the song above.
