Many, if not all, of Kevin Gates biggest fans and staunchest supporters were stunned last month when the Islah rapper was sentenced by an Illinois judge to spend the 30 months in prison after being found guilty of weapons charges. As it turns out however, the sentence might not be as bad as some feared and Gates could receive his freedom a whole lot sooner than many first thought. According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, the rapper’s first chance for parole comes up in June of 2018.
It’s not ideal, but it’s definitely better than the alternative. Gates was expected to regain his freedom back in March after serving out a six months sentence for kicking a female fan during one of his shows in Florida. That didn’t happen however, because as authorities were out processing him, they discovered that he had a warrant out for his arrest stemming from weapons charges in Illinois. So, instead of being reunited with his family, he was sent up North were he plead guilty and was given this new heavy sentence.
Shortly after that legal setback, Gates wife Dreka posted a message to Instagram to thank the Baton Rouge rapper’s fans for their support during this time. “Thoughts become things,” she wrote. “Let’s all be positive. Send positive energy, positive thoughts.”
