If you haven’t heard the name Kweku Collins, you’re missing out. Over the past year, the Chicago-area rapper has been quietly positioning himself as one of the most dynamic rising artists to come out of that vibrant city. His 2016 debut Nat Love was fantastic, and he’s looking to double down on that success today with a brand new EP titled Grey.
Collins newest release is a nine-track, thirty minute, quick hit of ethereal rap tracks that will leave you hypnotized and asking for more. The standout is the single, “International Business Trip,” a syrupy self-reflection on where he’s been and how far he’s come. “I’m just a twenty-something thinking ’bout my early years,” he raps.
In a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune, Collins talked about his outsider status in the Chicago scene as a resident of nearby Evanston. “I’m very aware that people in Chicago feel that Evanston is separate, and I feel the same way,” he told Greg Kot. “As far as all the success and talent (among Chicago artists), it is so intimidating, but it’s also amazing. These are artists I grew up with and resonated with, some I idolized. There is a sense of pride. I’m aware that my music is lumped in with Chicago, and I’m grateful to be included in that beautiful fabric. I do think that’s the bar, and the bar has been set tremendously high. Every song I make is an attempt to clear that bar.”
