“The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men, / Gang aft agley” or as it sounds translated to English – the best laid plans often go awry. And it’s very true. All the planning in the world sometimes can’t save you from yourself. Just ask Donald Lee Hamlett.
Hamlett is a love sick dude from Burlington, North Carolina, recently dumped by his lady. Sadly he didn’t take it well and long story short, his ex had a restraining order placed, ordering Hamlett not to make direct or indirect contact with her.
Bummer.
Hamlett wouldn’t go quietly and after what can we only imagine were several failed attempts at winning her back via conventional means, he hatched a plan he thought was sure to work. He would write a letter to Edder Vedder, frontman of Pearl Jam, Hamlett’s ex’s favorite band. In presumably the most eloquent of ways, Hamlett would implore Vedder to reach out to Hamlett’s ex, convincing her to return; maybe even drop that pesky restraining order.
Sounds like a pretty fool-proof plan.
So that’s what Hamlett did; wrote a letter, a very long letter, to Vedder. He dropped it in the mail and waited for phase two of his plan to kick into action.
Slight problem though. Hamlett neglected to include postage, which resulted in the letter being returned to sender. The sender in question didn’t end up being Hamlett, but his ex, who as you might have guessed, wasn’t all that taken by his plan and the contents of the letter, which included among other things, Hamlett admitting he was risking going to jail for attempting by asking Vedder to contact her. When you’re talking about restraining orders, this is a big no-no and Hamlett’s ex promptly turned the letter over to police who subsequently took Hamlett into custody, where he is currently being held without bail.
So close, Donald. So close.
