R&B singer, Suge Knight ex-wife, and one-time fiancée of Dr. Dre, Michel’le has said she has a much different recollection of how things went down during the days portrayed in the Straight Outta Compton film, and now she has an avenue to tell them. Lifetime has announced the production of Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Me, a biopic about Michel’le’s time entrenched in the N.W.A. and Death Row Records camps that were often abusive atmospheres for women.
Michel’le — who has a son with Dre, and is best known for her 1990 hit single “No More Lies,” — will be played by Lincoln Heights star Rhyon Nicole Brown. Curtis Hamilton has been pegged to play Dre, Jamie Kennedy to play music manager Jerry Heller, and R. Marcos Taylor will play the role of Suge Knight, one he played priorly in last year’s hit Straight Outta Compton film. Straight Outta Compton drew some audience backlash for omitting Dr. Dre’s history of violence against women. Although Dre issued an apology in the face of the complaints at the time, Michel’le categorized them as just ‘Good PR’.
In the film’s first promo — that aired exclusively on Billboard earlier today — Michel’le pulls a “Parental Advisory” sticker off her lips as a message that reads, “Behind the men who changed hip-hop is the woman who knows the truth” is shown. The film is set to be released in October.
