Listen To Marvin Gaye’s Insane Isolated Vocal Track For ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’

I have a confession to make: I’m not much of a Marvin Gaye fan. He’s someone that I respect more than actually like, his voice and the production of his songs always sounding a little too restrained, a little too pitch perfect for his/their own good. It’s the difference between the Sam Cooke on the radio and the wild, sweaty Sam Cooke of Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963. After hearing the isolated vocal track of Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” though, I may have to rethink my position. It’s ridiculous. With the strings stripped away, Gaye sounds so much more human, like he’s making the song up on the spot.

Now let’s hear the raisins.
