Canadian pop treasure Nelly Furtado is an excellent professional recording artist. You know that already, but it never hurts to mention this fact every now and again. So when Nelly covers a Drake + Rihanna combo gem, you know you’re in safe hands.
As noted by Idolator, Nelly has crafted her own take on the absorbing Views standout. Arriving with little in the way of fanfare, this new spin on “Too Good” is a stripped-down acoustic affair with a different aura of intimacy from the source material, but still stellar. The track is above in Spotify form for your listening pleasure.
Speaking of new Nelly offerings, a new album (her first since 2012’s lukewarmly received The Spirit Indestructible) is said to be on the way for March 2017. Speaking with i-D, Nelly offered her perspective on what to expect from The Ride.
I would call the sound of the album modern pop-alternative. I write pop melodies, I’ve always written pop melodies. But (producer John Congleton) forces me to dig a little deeper and make sure that I’m coming correct with the lyrics. I was also in a really cool phase in my life where I was going through a difficult time of transition and that helped lyrically. I just had so much to write about. I think I grew as a songwriter on this album.
We’re looking forward to the full-length bubbling up next year, but if Nelly Furtado wants to knock out more Drake covers before its release, that’s cool too.
