Omarion’s biggest hit to date may not be his after all. At least that’s what a new lawsuit involving the singer contends.
BMG Rights Management filed suit against Omarion, DJ Mustard and Atlantic Records in federal court contending O’s 2014 song “Post to Be” was a ripoff of a Chris Brown song which they have rights to, per a report by The Jasmine Brand. They’re asking for as much as $300K in damages as a result.
BMG contends that well known singer-songwriter Redwine, who has worked with everyone from Tinashe and the aforementioned Brown to Waka Flocka Flame and others, assigned 50% of the rights to Chris Brown’s “Came to Do” to them since he helped pen the 2014 song. Later in the year, Brown joined Omarion, DJ Mustard, Jhene Aiko and producer Nic Nac in creating the “eat the booty like groceries” smash that peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard US Rhythmic at one point. Per the report, BMG believes Omarion’s song is “identical in pitches, intervals, rhythmic durations and beat placement.” As such, they want what they’re owed.
“BMG filed suit demanding an injunction against the label and Omarion from continuing to illegally profit off their work along with accounting for the his album sales and damages up to $150k per time they infringed on “Came To Do” and no less than $300k in actual damages.”
