Passion Pit frontman Michael Angelakos revealed that he is gay on author Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast. Angelakos discussed his struggles with being gay and the dissolution of his marriage to ex-wife Kristy Mucci. The singer has been very candid about his own struggles with bipolar disorder, but said he had trouble acting the same way about his sexuality.
“Unlike bipolar, it was like, ‘Don’t go get help. Don’t talk to anybody.’ I lived in such a straight group of people… it was just, like, not the time.”
Angelakos added that his wife “quieted” his struggles over how he felt about women.
“It’s always been about putting it off in my head — not consciously… it’s so much more comfortable to go back to what you know,” he said. “I just wanted so badly to be straight, because I love her so much. I think that was one of the most painful things when we decided to separate.”
The singer said that his wife told him to “figure out what’s going on with his sexuality” and to stop hating himself. Ellis also opens up about his own decision to come out.
The whole podcast is worth a listen, but the discussion of Angelakos’ sexuality begins at around 49:00.
